I Don’t Want to Hear Your News Unintentionally

Lately, my friends have been telling me
about their trips
while they are still on them
or asking me questions
but not really asking them to me
(dangling questions
on hook and line, ready
for anyone to bite)
or inviting me to events
that they don’t really care who goes to.

I am all ears and eyes and face
and these books are unread
on the shelf because I know more
about my cousins travels
then she tells me, I know more
about my brother’s experience
as a Jew on Christmas morning
than he has mentioned

and I really don’t want to know
about any of it unless
one of them calls me
and says to me hey,
guess what I did?
Or, hey, let me ask you
a question. Or, hey,
you know what I’ve been thinking
about?  And then I will respond:
What? Yes! I don’t know,
but please tell me!
